HEIDI POPOVIC

Bridging Digital Precision and Architectural Narration

Development of architecture-related surfaces based on vector graphics. These are produced using industrial manufacturing processes such as laser cutting, laser engraving, reverse glass printing, and sandblasting techniques. The combination of digital drawing systems with materials such as glass, metal, and wood creates structured interventions in space.

Wall coverings made of Plexiglas with large-format vector graphics. The application of digital drawing systems to room surfaces eliminates the separation between graphics and building structure. The project is based on the transfer of Baroque design elements into digital manufacturing processes.

The design is based on a combination of different material finishes. The kitchen splashback consists of black lacquered glass panels with laser-engraved candle holder motifs. Backlighting makes these structures visible. The kitchen fronts are printed with vector graphics and finished with a high-gloss lacquer. Graphic representations of champagne bottles, insects, and other motifs in original size complement the wall and furniture surfaces.

The design of this kitchen splashback is based on a digital print on paper, which was applied under glass. The design incorporates detailed vector graphics of wine and champagne bottles. As a central element, customized to the customer's specifications, the luxury train “The Royal Scotsman” was incorporated into the graphic composition.

This object is based on laser-cut Plexiglas with a span of 180 cm. The front is laser engraved, while the back is coated with copper foil. Each of the 15 candle shapes has an LED unit on the back, whose light is indirectly reflected via the wall. The design integrates all technical components and cable channels within the graphic structure. The luminaire is available as a modular series with 3 to 15 arms in graduated widths.

The design of the ceiling in a historic building in Innsbruck is based on an anthracite-colored mirror element. The motif was incorporated into the mirror layer using reverse sandblasting and is illuminated from above. The graphic plane continues into the room through the combination with adjacent mirror surfaces on the walls. This arrangement uses reflection to visually eliminate the physical boundaries of the room and creates a calculated spatial depth.

WALL PANELING DIGITAL PRINTING ON WOOD

A symbiosis of classic paneling and contemporary graphics

The interior cladding of this sanitary room consists of wood panels with direct digital printing. The expansive pattern is based on a lily graphic, into which motifs such as champagne bottles, high heels, and insects are integrated in their original size. A specific detail is the depiction of a bark beetle, which serves as a reference to the transience of wood as a material and of transience in general. The work uses the natural wood grain as a haptic element and adds a narrative layer to the classic wall design.

The table consists of a black high-gloss lacquered wooden frame and a glass top printed on the reverse side. The motif shows a cigar cutter from the S.T. Dupont brand, embedded in the lily pattern of the French royal family. The title “Marie Antoinette” refers to the visual analogy between the mechanism of the cigar cutter and a guillotine. The work addresses the contrast between haptic exclusivity and a macabre historical context.

WOOL & SILK

The realisation of digital designs using traditional knotting techniques

This collection is a co-production with the GEBA carpet gallery. The designs were hand-knotted from wool and silk in a Nepalese factory. The design uses the different light reflections of the materials to make the precise vector patterns tactile. Each piece combines traditional knotting art with contemporary graphic design.

Elevator

The cabin and shaft of this lift in a Viennese attic apartment were clad with reverse-printed glass. The graphic composition thematises the ascent to the roof garden: while the champagne motif accompanies the upward movement, mundane elements remain in the lower area. At the customer's request, the silhouette of a Weimaraner was integrated into the vector design. The work combines technical precision with a personal narrative within the glass architecture.
