Using the history of the Gusen concentration camp, which was run as a subcamp of the Mauthausen concentration camp but is hardly known today, I would like to address the Austrian way of dealing with its National Socialist past in the post-war years up to the present day. 
This approach is characterized by successful repression, ignoring and seeing oneself as a victim.
It is therefore all too logical that after the end of the Second World War, the traces of the inglorious immediate past were removed as quickly as possible. 
Parts of the Gusen concentration camp were converted into a settlement of detached houses. 

The entrance building with the former entrance gate now stands as a symbol of a petty bourgeois idyll that wants nothing to do with history and its effects.

A few weeks ago, a rededication of land in Hirtenberg made the headlines. 
A business park will soon be built where the women's concentration camp once stood.
